If you capitalize a letter it will bold that column in the listing. If you want to sort the columns differently, add &sortby=dwvlnu -- change the order of the letters to change the sort. e.g.
Vinnie, For us non power users where am I typing this info to get sorts & is there some way to add drink after & before dates to Cellar list. Sorry, not a computer guy.
Doug
PS You guys are doing a WONDERFUL job with this site. Ireccommend to everyone.
We're working on a form to make the columns easier to get to so you don't need to be a power computer user. In the meantime you can change the columns on your report by hand-editing the URL in your browser.
Look for the columns= part in the URL. Each letter stands for one of the columns. The letters are:
d Year ("date") w Wine v Variety l Location p Region ("place") r Rating n Num u update a drink after b drink before t tasting notes
If you capitalize the letter (say, W instead of w) then that column will be bolded.
So if you want a report with just Year, Winery and Quantity, you would use the url:
As I said we're going to make this easier so you don't have to edit URLs to get custom cellar reports, but in the meantime you can fiddle with the columns to get the reports you need.
I like to try different grapes, not just those that we know well. That way I have a more rounded offering for those tastings. I think it also helps develop those tasting skills.
Bryn, you can type a varietal into the box that isn't in the pulldown, right? Even if you don't have one in the list it's possible to put it in as a special if you type its name I think.
Your new print version cuts off the last entry on every page now, I have tried adjusting my printer, but no luck. I did not have that problem before, any ideas? Help!!!!!!!!!!! Doug
It cuts off when I print to paper. It is the "print version" the regular list that you had before printed better. I am using AOL and their broser. I have tried to find a way to change margins but unless I am in Word or Excel I can not get that option.
Thanks Doug
PS Reports print OK,anything longer than a page dropsthe last wine each page.
One question so far; in the "Add a Wine" page there fields like "Winery" and "Wine Notes", can one bring these fields as columns in the "Cellar Listing" page ?
The "Wine" column is actually a combination of the Winery plus the Wine name fields from the add form. So that should be on your Cellar listing by default.
I've added Wine Notes so you can see those along with Tasting Notes. They appear (if you've entered something in that field) on a line beneath the wine entry.
Would it be possible to search the UPC database, instead of just browsing? I think that would really help to make sure that folks use the UPC and that your database grows in scope and quality.
I am new to the site and find it extremely useful and well designed. Not to mention the fact that it is free! As a resident of Switzerland, I wonder if "Vaud" and "Valais" could not be added as the two main wine growing regions under "Switzerland" in the "Region" drop down menu. On the "Varietal" side, I wonder why "Beaujolais", for instance, was added (it is also listed under "Region")since it is not a variety as such but a "region" where "gamay" is the dominant varietal. The same goes for "Chablis", not a varietal but the name of a region around the town of Chablis, in Burgundy, where the varietal used is mostly "Chard." Just curious and my thanks to the designer of Bottlecount.
I added the two regions under Switzerland. I don't claim that all the regions and/or varietals are perfect. Many regional names get misused as the name of the wine and/or grape. I'll consult my wine books about Chablis & beaujolais and sort them out.
Two requests, one really important one and one convenience issue:
1. Please have either a VERIFY DELETE function or at least a message that says "You have just deleted (name of wine/vintage)". The keyboard and the mouse took off and I accidentally deleted something and all it did was take me to a cellar listing - I still haven't figured out what I deleted!
2. Please add a button to "ADD THIS WINE" at the bottom of the entry screen. I always have to scroll back up to the top of the screen to ADD a wine after I complete the form.
How about being able to add an image of the label? I take a picture of all my bottles/labels for my local database I've been keeping on my Mac.
Also, is there a way to indicate which wines you've already enjoyed and therefore are no longer in your cellar. Perhaps with a date and some tasting notes?
It's possible I just haven't found these features as I just discovered Bottle Count yesterday. Keep up the good work!
Under Australia: Margaret River, Coonawarra Under New Zealand: Central Otago, Marlborough, Hawke's Bay Under Italy: Abruzzo, Alto Adige, Emilia Romagna, Friuli, Umbria
There will always be obscure Italian varietals that can be added, but I would suggest adding Valpolicella, Chianti (Classico), Amarone, and Ripasso, based on my personal use of this great web tool! They are all fairly common, and sit sort of awkwardly between varietal and region, since they are all blends of one kind or another. I would also suggest a "mark as consumed" option, which would be useful so that the user can keep a record of the wine without it being in the cellar - right now I am using an asterisk in the wine title to indicate consumed, and simply not adding it to the cellar. It works, but there must be a more elegant way. Keep up the good work!
Any thoughts on using XML to transfer data up and down to the website? My idea would be to integrate the database to a local application. Although keeping my inventory in the web app is cool, I can imagine a local application could have lots more features, as well as integrating better with barcode scanners.
Example process : 1. User scans UPC in local app 2. XML request sent to web app with UPC code 3. If found, return XML record of wine info. If not found, prompt user for fields and send the new record to bottlecount for addition to database
The user's inventory would no longer be managed in the web app, but the database would get new wines added from the user.
We would really like to hear what you have to say
