Scanned in the UPC from a bottle of Ch. Garraud 2000 (Lalande de Pomerol), and discovered the code had already been applied to a different wine (a Barolo).
Could an importer have been reusing codes? Error in the database this was imported from? Any other explanation? Any protocol you've got for handling this?

In short, yes. UPC codes can be resued and often are. Usually its the same wine, but a differnt vintage. Liquor stores can assign their own UPC codes for wines that don't already have there own. (Very few imported wines have UPCs on them from the winery.) So from year to year the same store can reuse the UPC for other merchandice.
Frustrating I know. UPCs are far from perfect.
