Posted by acuityid on 05/13 at 04:57 PST in General I am both and RFID engineer and a wine lover. Working with wines and trying to keep track of what my stock is at any moment can be a pain, and must be even more so for a restaurant or wine distributor. These thoughts and my technical know how inspired me to create an RFID enabled wine rack. For those of you who don't know what RFID is, check my website www.acuityid.com for more info. Basically it is a system for reading the identification of an object using radio waves and a special tag affixed to an item. With my system, an adhesive rfid label is affixed to the bottle of wine and then the bottles barcode is scanned. A data base coorelates teh barcode with a unique serial number in the rfid tag. Once tagged, the bottle can now be located without th eneed to scan with a reader. When the bottle is placed in an empty spot in my rack, the system knows what spot its in and udated that location information in my wine database. If I remove the bottle from the rack..it removes that specific bottle from the inventory. If I move the bottles from one location to another, the system identifies where it is and updates my inventory list again. I always know which spot a particular wine is located in. My rack only holds 48 bottles, but think about how helpful this would be in manageing a large collection or restaurant or distributor inventory!..Right now its a bit costly, but I am working hard on reducing the cost to a point where it would make sense for teh home collector as well as a restaurant. I am improving th esoftware application to allow for automatic ordering and such for a restaurant installation, as well as internet access to a data base with all the info about a wine. If anyone is interested in finding out more, email me at [email protected] or give me a call at 410-951-9144 Thanks! Bill Poulsen

Bill,
Sounds very interesting for large personal collections and rest. applications. My wine collection consists of over 120 bottles in 5 locations in 3 rooms (list avail under user name "reed"). RFID is way beyond my level of dedication to wine location and inventory. Will be looking for employment in the Southern IL area following my retirement from the Navy circa 2008.
Best of luck - Reed

Thanks,
I see you are ex navy..I was never in the but worked a few yrs as a civilian contractor at PAX River in Southern MD about 5yrs back. Did RADAR engineering work. What sort of employment are you looking for?..Seems maybe a civilian contractor type of thing might be good for you, unless you want to stay as far away from that as possible!...
Well anyway, this RFID stuff is still pricey for most things, but like all technology, in few yrs will be dirt cheap.

We would really like to hear what you have to say
