Any thoughts on online wine sales?
We are launching http://www.slovakwine.com late this fall and I was wondering what everyone thought about online wine sales? We are targetting a really small niche - Slovak and Czech wines - but I am guessing that the positives/negatives of a big online wine seller will be the same as what we will face. Probably going to start out with a few Tokaj, Reisling, and Muscat wines.
Insanely silly shipping prices are really the only glaring ouch that I see right now. There are companies that handle all of the storage, delivery, legal yuck......for a price.
Thanks in advance.

Your point about high shipping costs certainly is a factor. That is the reason I quit the wineries' private clubs; a significant percentage of the cost was for shipping.

It is definitely going to be a challenge for us at http://www.slovakwine.com. It looks like we might have our wine for sale online in December 2002. Probably have two Tokaj wines, two reds, and two whites at http://www.slovakwine.com (or http://www.czechwines.com). We will probably have to nudge people to buy two bottles at a time instead of just one. This is obviously not ideal but the price difference for shipping two bottles versus one is almost nothing...... Anyways, if all goes well we will be able to at least get our Tokaj (aka - Tokay, Tokaji, Tokajske) wines into general circulation eventually so that everyone can enjoy them without having to pay shipping. They match up with Hungarian Tokaj quite well. Enough ranting, thanks for the post though.
