Just want to ask if anyone has had an opportunity to try this (cultish) boutique wine. I often wonder how much of the price of similar wine is based on the mystique and how much on the quality. But, sad to say, my ignorance didn't keep me from buying a bottle when opportunity arose.
I had never heard of it until you mentioned it, so I did a quick search. It looks like it goes for around $80 per bottle. Thats pretty expensive for an American Merlot, but not outrageous.
It would be interesting to compare it to some of the fine French merlots from Bordeaux.
hey Jeff: I've been purchasing Leonetti Cab & Merlot for several years now, and cellaring them (mostly). They are sinful good, but when I've opened them I've been struck by the old 'baby killer' guilt. By the way, you can get added to their 'direct purchase' list by sending a note to the winery. It takes a year or two, but then you get a chance to buy a case or two at ~$60/bottle.
Leonetti merlot is best drunk young. The tell-tale graham cracker nose is a hedonistic pleasure that has few peers. It's a very oaky, sumptuous wine. Huge and bursting at the seams this wine will bowl over your guests. I like the '99 better than the '00 but they're both good (if explosions of fruit and oak are what you are after). These wines are not subtle, but unlike the typical Napa cabs they have a different, more agreeable profile.
Go to Whitehouse Crawford - an amazing restaurant in Walla Walla where they serve Leonetti by the glass! I've been told to buy 2 bottles. Try one now. Give #2 another year.
We would really like to hear what you have to say
