Wine Notes: | Staete Landt is owned by the dynamic Dutch expatriate couple Ruud Maasdam and Dorien Vermaas. On two visits to Toronto last year, their enthusiasm was infectious. They happily talked about their small, carefully considered property, explaining the origins of their name while showing maps of their land and sampling their wines. Staete Landt was the first European name given to New Zealand by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642. It means 'land discovered in honour of the Governors (Staete) of the Dutch Republic'. Tasman also discovered Tasmania, Fiji and Tonga. The 2001 vintage represents Staete Landt's second vintage. If this is the shape of things to come, they have a very good future indeed. Vintages tasting note: Pale straw colour with aromas of gooseberry, passion fruit and lime. Dry, very fresh and clean with expressive fruit and citrus aroma replays on the palate. Medium full-bodied with a long, crisp finish. Very good representation of the classic Kiwi style of Sauvignon Blanc. (David Churchill, Oct. 2002) Food match: lightly spiced calamari, crab cakes. (Source: Vintages, July 2003). Comments on 2000 vintage: Crisp, zingy and remarkably focused, this shows lots of green apple, lime and papaya aromas and flavors; balances sweet flavors with lively acidity on the long finish. Debut vintage for the U.S. 2,000 cases made. (Wine Spectator, May 31, 2001). |
