Wine Notes:  In 1976, Neil and Maria Empson were the first international wine experts to export Chardonnay from Italy. They created the 'Bollini' Chardonnay in 1982 to market the wines under their own imprimatur. The wine met with such success, they introduced a full 'Bollini' line of wines shortly thereafter. The Chardonnay 'Barricato 40' is 40% fermented in new French barriques. Food match: smoked turkey breast. (Source: Vintages, June 2003). Among the whites, I was impressed with Bollini Chardonnay Barricato 40 2001 ($12.95, product No. 987503), made by Empson & Co., a consistently good producer of value-priced wines in northern Italy's Trentino region. It's medium-bodied, with flavours of pear and pineapple, deliciously balanced with crisp acidity. The "40" in its name refers to the fact that 40 per cent of the juice was fermented in French oak barrels, imparting a nicely understated flavour of vanilla and a silky texture. A terrific, balanced chardonnay for everyday. (Source: Beppi Crosariol, Globe & Mail, June 21, 2003).
