Wine Notes:  Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has been lauded as a majestic growing region as far back as the 16th century when, in 1549, Pope Paul III's cellar master praised them as 'perfect wines'. Praise continued until the 1960s when, like much of the red wines of Tuscany, the reputation suffered. However, in the 1980s, when the rules were slackened to allow the elimination of the white grape Malvasia from the blend, Vino Nobile's place in the wine world soared once again. Under the current DOCG rules, producers are only allowed to use 80% of the superior Prugnolo Gentile Sangiovese clone in their wines. Many of the better producers openly flout this and use only this clone in their wines. Today, innovative producers also continue to push the quality of the wines, experimenting with small barrels, careful pruning and rigorous winery work. Tasting note: Tuscany enjoyed fine harvests after the blockbuster '97, so don't overlook buys such as this...Very pretty aromas of spices, berries and minerals herald this medium-to full-bodied Tuscan red, with firm, polished tannins and medium finish. Best from 2003 through 2008. Smart Buy. Score - 89. (James Suckling, Wine Spectator, Sept. 19, 2002) Food match: rare beef dishes with a side order of wild mushroom risotto.
