Wine Notes: | Though the 2000 vintage had not been reviewed at press time (very early reports indicate it is a wine that needs some mid to long-term ageing), John Platter South African Wines 2003 generally rates the wine **** 1/2 (out of five). Only made with the best estate lots of fruit, the wine's name is a tribute to Cyril Back, father (and South African Shiraz pioneer) of current owner, Charles Back. Fairview Wines is one of the best producers, not only in Paarl, but in all of South Africa. It is their attention to detail that allows this phenomenal producer to continue to go from strength to strength. (Source: Vintages, April 2003). Comments on 1999 vintage: Smells like raspberry compote, with succulent raspberry and blackberry fruit, plus a healthy dollop of sweet, creamy toast on the mouthfilling finish. Very hard not to like this. Drink now through 2003. 1,000 cases made. (Source: Wine Spectator, October 31, 2001). |
