Wine Notes:  The news out of Germany is great once again. After a lacklustre harvest in 2000, which broke a string of consecutive great years dating back to the fall of the Berlin Wall, German riesling is again riding high. Wines from the superb 2001 harvest are reaching Canadian shelves and represent some of the freshest, fruitiest, most interesting whites around. They're also arriving just in time for light and lively spring and summer menus, with which they pair so well. And the nice thing about German riesling, as connoisseurs know, is that many can be laid down for years. Some German rieslings have the concentration and acidity, the perfect balance, to age beautifully for a decade or more. Sommeliers at fine restaurants are scooping up 2001s from such top producers as St.-Urbans-Hof and Schloss Schonborn, proclaiming the vintage the finest since 1975 or even perhaps the legendary 1971. A dry October in much of the country in 2001 yielded concentrated grapes with intense, complex flavours. Paradoxically, it's that intensity, coupled with varying degrees of sweetness, that turn off many wine newcomers who prefer the lean, zippy crowd-pleasing quaffability of such popular whites as pinot grigio and sauvignon blanc. But if there's a time to explore the rewarding, food-friendly flavours of riesling, it's now. A good place to start is with Reichsrat von Buhl Forster Bischofsgarten Riesling Kabinett 2001 from the Pfalz region ($19.95, product No. 988527), which goes on sale today in Ontario as part of Vintages' first June release. It's medium-dry and almost medium-bodied, with rich flavours of canned-peach and honey. The balancing acidity gives it a delicious lift and would make it a lovely apéritif to kick off a summer dinner party. (Source: Beppi Crosariol, Globe & Mail, June 7, 2003). Our panel's tasting note: Classic Pfalz Riesling. Pale straw colour with aromas of peach, apricot and floral tones. Medium-dry with a persistent balance between fruit and acid. Light to medium-bodied with a good finish. (Sept. 2002) Food match: aperitif. (Source: Vintages, June 2003).
