Wine Notes:  A multi-award winner in 2002, including Golds at Vinalies International and the Concours General Chambre d'Agriculture, both in Paris, a Silver at the International Wine & Spirits Competition and a Bronze at the International Wine Challenge, both in London. Lezongars is certainly a name to watch. For many years Philip and Sarah Iles ran two very successful dining clubs in London's financial district but Pontac's was bombed out by the IRA in the 1993 Bishopsgate blast and Mr Garraway's [their second restaurant] was encountering problems so they decided to move to Bordeaux to realise a long-held ambition to make rather than sell wine. They bought Château Lezongars (I still don't know what a zongars is) and its 40 hectares of vineyard just in time for the 1998 harvest. Since then the property has been converted to one designed to sell fruity, quite modern wine in bottle rather than in bulk ... L'Enclos du Château Lezongars is a special bottling ... All of [the] wines, described by the Iles family as New Wave Bordeaux, are still quite reasonably priced. (Jancis Robinson MW, www.jancisrobinson.com, Dec. 17, 2002). Tasting note: Lots of new wood, but also impressive aromas of ripe fruit. Medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a vanilla, berry aftertaste. Best after 2005. Score - 87. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, March 31, 2003). Food match: grilled lamb chops with ratatouille. (Source: Vintages, August 2003).
