Mayo Family Winery seems to be pretty new: founded in 1994. So there isn't much to go on with reguard to the long term age-ablitiy of their cabernet. You might just try calling the winery to see how long they think you should hold the cabernet.
It looks like they are a member of the "Family Wineries of Somoma." If you're ever in Sonoma, this is a great place to taste wine. Several small wineries all in one location. Sharing space makes it possible for these really small wineries to have a tasting room. Sometimes you get some really unusual wines.
I waited tables at a fine dining restaurant in Texas in college and Jeff Mayo (GM of the vineyard) came by and we did a tasting w/ him. I can't recall the Cab that we tasted, but we also tasted the 1998 Shannon's Block Merlot. It was one of the best merlot's I have ever had. The wine is filled w/ blackberry and chocolate with a hint of oak and a great mint finish. I bought 3 bottles last year and had one of them about a month ago. It was even better than the first tasting. they have a decent website - and you can purchase the wine from the site. I have emailed them a few times and they are very quick to respond.
This is a great wine but not very ageworthy, I had the 98 cab a few weeks ago and its running out of time. Its a killer wine though. I have heard the pinot is incredible. Overall its good but a little pricey relative to the ageworthiness
My company sells a number of Mayo wines, and they are very popular, because they offer a lot of depth and character, yet also tend to age pretty well -- depending on the varietal, of course. I can make these wines (and many others) available if anyone is interested.
We would really like to hear what you have to say
