Wine Notes: | 'Heritage Road' came by its name because of politics. It was originally named 'Hermitage Road' (the winery, on the label, still bears that name) after the location of the property. Starting with the 1999 vintage, the 'm' was dropped, changing the name to Heritage because of an agreement Australia has with France. Under this agreement Australia may not name any of their wines or wineries after appellation contrôlée names found in France. Hermitage, of course, is a famous region in the Northern Rhône. Similarly, Penfolds dropped Hermitage from Grange Hermitage. Founded in 1997 by Lisa McGuigan, daughter of Brian McGuigan, the winery is known as Tempus Two in Oz. The wines are made by New Zealand expat Peter Hall. He worked at several Australian properties before joining the winery in 1996. This is one of three Reserve wines we are releasing on September 20th. The other two are Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Reserve Shiraz (905976 and 905968 respectively). Each is single vineyard designated and made in small lots by Hall because, as a winemaker, he has always been intrigued by what an individual property can bring to a wine. The Shiraz is from Limestone Coast and the Cabernet is from Barossa Valley. (Source: Vintages, September 6, 2003). |
