I am doing some homework in regards to my dream of importing some very unique wines to the USA from Spain. Is there anyone who can offer information (including websites) on: 1. import laws for California - federal and state 2. where to look for transportation / transport issues 3. import licenses 4. books / publications on this matter 5. anything else?? Thanks for whatever information you can offer! I have looked over this site and seen some information that will be useful, but there really is so precious little out there in way of this type of information... I have exclusive rights for several wine producers for the USA, but i really have so much work to get to before bringing in the first shipments. Thanks, Andrew :wq

Has anyone come up with any info? I am trying to do the same for some wine from Italy. Please forward any info.
Thanx

I am looking into the same idea importing into the midwest and SW of the US.

Wines from Italy, around the Carrerra area.

You need to go to each individual states Commerce Commission. There is tons of paper work and license fees. That's what turns a 5.00 Euro bottle of wine into a 19.00 us.

Ted

Hello,
If you are interested by importing French wines to USA, I can be your contact in France. I know many vineyards and selected wine growers in many areas, as you probably know that french vineyards are often characterised by a territory. So it is not very easy, but many wines are so interesting.
I'm also involved in organic and biodynamic wines.

U.S. Customs releases and advice can be obtained from a licensed Customs house broker. The company I work for is in Hawthorne, California by LAX but we can
clear shipments in all 50 states.
The charge for service is usually under $200.00 Plus delivery charges if requested.

Thank you,

Don - my husband and I were recently in South Africa and were going to ship a pallet of 20 cases of wine back to Houston - for us - not to sell. Everything was arranged except for the fact we couldn't find someone with a import license back in Houston to help us. Is this something your company would handle??

many thanks,

Hi,

I have been in contact with a sake company in Japan that would like to start distributing in the U.S. Do you know how I could become a licensed importer in New York for such an undertaking?

Do you have any other info that may be helpful in this process?

Thanks,
Justin

might be hard to get into NY.
When you get set up, I can introduce a few Sake producers and help with shipping from this side.

I am currently living in Southern California and am very interested in learning all the "ins and outs" of importing wine from SA. I am not South-African by birth, but spent most of my life there (permanent-resident) and have dreamed of running a successful South-African wine import company, not only for the possibility of profit but also for the prospect of pouring money into South Afica's economy. If you have the time, please shoot me an email...with any info you can spare- I would greatly appreciate it!!!-Heather

Our company, Imbongi Wines, was the first Black/White joint venture in the SA wine industry and has won an award for our Cape Afrika wines in the UK in 1996. We have just released the fantastic IMBONGI labels - Imbongi is the praise singer in African culture. The labels & wine is sophisticated and we are looking for US based importers.

Advise.

We are two brothers that have set up an USA based wine import company in the US, MI; and have obtained a lisence to import wine into the USA and specificallly the State of Michigan. We have also gone through the process of registering brands and labels in the US. We are in the process of importing a wine under our own label but are looking for a quality wine with a very specific and sophisticated african brand. Please contact us should you be interested.

We currently live in Germany and have 300+ wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Chianti, etc. in our cellar from trips to the regions. The only thing I have been told (by the company who will do the moving) that the most concerned you have to be is about getting it past the State importation checks. They want their tax money. Other than that, it'S just a matter of greasing a few palms on the European end. If anyone can add information to this post as far as where to go to get more specific info on *legally* importing, it would be most appreciated.

They might know what it takes to at least get an importing license. Beyond that, I'd try talking to local importers and see what they had to do to get into the business.

importer license in the USA? I have
vineyard sources in France, but don't
know how to legally import wines into
the US. This is not planned as a large-scale importing business.

manchego 11/10/2004 at 08:53 PST [Reply]

Well, this may be of some help to a few of you:

Under the 21 Ammendment to the Constitution of the United States, individual States are allowed to further define how they wish to handle alcohol law, but of course maintaining the basic mandate of the 21st.

I say all that to encourage you to check with the governing body for alcohol in your State. In AZ it's the Dept of Liquor Licenses and Control. In CA it's the Alcohol Beverage Control. In NV it's thru the Secretary of State. So you are going to have to figure out a.) what the office is called, and b.) what licenses they require.

CA allows an importer to also be a distributor, a 3 tier State, but that is not common to most States. So effectively, in most other States you may only be an importer, who sells to a distributor, who sells to a retailer, who sells to a consumer -- aka, a 4 tier State. You can see how this affects pricing!

Transportation: Find out the name of the service port (ocean port) of the country you want to export from, and see if they have a website. Generally they will offer information on 3rd party shipping solutions. Also, do a search on shipping keywords for the country you want to work out of.

Be prepared to have to jump thru hoops! I cannot stress this enough! You will have to fill out mountains of paperwork, fill it out again because it was not done right in the first place, perhaps hire a consultant, etc... Also, be prepared to WAIT. It's just not possible to hurry the licensing approval process along. The best thing you can do is study the requirements, fill out the paperwork properly, and be sure to have your ducks in a row. Not trying to scare anyone, but that's the reality of it.

Good luck to those of you who want to import!

If someone else imports the wine for you, you still need a license to sell the wine to restaurants, correct? Does anyone know an importer with licenses for Massachusetts or Rhode Island? All,

Sorry to post the same question as everyone, but does anyone have experience in importing wines from Italy?

I am looking to open a small wine and cheese "bar" with retail possibilities and want to know if it is possible to directly import wines or how much of a premium will I pay if I go through a local distributor?

Thanks in advance for any help or comments.

Cliff

I did a business plan to open a wine bar w/ small plates in LA, and I am now setting up an import business of French wines in CA instead. Because of the tier system, you can only import and wholesale, or retail on and off premise, but you cannot be part of more than one of the 3 tier. Same as a wholesaler cannot sell to customers, only to retail on and off premise. You will have to go through a wholesaler, but your margins are huge in the wine bar set up, especially by the glass!

Good luck

Sam

Hello,
Im looking for a business partner with whom to embark with on a business venture importing wines from Spain, Italy and SA. I do not need information regarding licensing, what I need is someone who is willing to assume half of the financial risk and half of the work load. You dont need to speak any foreign languages, but you do need to have some funds in order to split all costs of setting up the business. A sales background would be a plus. I have made some contacts in Spain and in Italy already, and I'm sure it would be easy for me to do the same in SA. Thank you.

Hello patti, I have friends in Italy that make fantastic wine, and they would like to export it to California through me. So I guess I need to figure out how to import wine now. Have you made any progress, in the last year? I am completely new at this, and would appreciate any info, from anyone. Thanks

I represent Ferme Pérignon a company in the Eastern Townships of Quebec Canada that grows and produces Blackcurrant products. We would like to introduce our 'Kir Massawippi' a masceration of blackcurrants in a high quality apple cider of 7% alcohol and also our 'Cassius' a blackcurrant liquor that is 20% alcohol.
We sell 60,000 bottles a year of the 'Kir Massawippi' here in Quebec.
We are interested in the Us market predominately California and NY State but may be interested in other States also.
If there is anyone interested in any buisness possibilities please contack [email protected]

Hello,

I am in the final stages of negotiating the purchase of an Argentinian vineyard and winery. Currently the winery is producing 5 labels: Syrah, Malbec, Chardonnay, Cabernet, and certified organic Cabernet. I am interested in making contact with importers from the US specifically WA,NY,CA,IL, Canada, Asia, and Europe. I am an American with basic knowledge of the US market but looking forward to building long standing business relationships and inviting future importers to my boutique hotel to tour the winery and vineyard. Any and all advice and help is very much appreciated!

Regards,
