Wine Notes: | The big winner from British Columbia is Gray Monk Pinot Gris 2001 ($15.90, No. 118638). This dry, unoaked white bursts forth with grapefruit, pear, citrus and a smoky-flinty quality. (Source: Globe and Mail, Beppi Crosariol, May 10, 2003). Their signature wine, Pinot Gris means Gray Friar or Gray Monk when translated from Hungarian (Szurkebarat). The year 2002, when this wine was released in BC, was a very good one for Gray Monk. They celebrated the 20th anniversary of the winery, the 30th anniversary of the vineyard and 40th wedding anniversary of George and Trudy Heiss (owners of the winery). George Jr. is the full-time winemaker, though George Sr. is still very actively involved. At the 2002 Atlanta International Wine Challenge, Gray Monk was honoured with the 2002 Generations Award for the Family Winery of Distinction (North and Latin American). To qualify for the award, the winery must have had the best showing for its region at this annual competition. At the Challenge, they won three gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Food match: pan-fried fresh lake fish. (Source: Vintages, May 10, 2003). |
