| Wine Notes: | Growing organic grapes isn't easy. Wine vines can be vulnerable to all sorts of disease and pestilence, and producing a crop without at least some help from synthetic chemicals demands meticulous care and tending in the field. That's why organic wines tend to carry a price premium. But it's hard to see where they hid the premium in Perrin Nature Côtes-du-Rhône 2000 ($14, No. 948059), one of the best-value reds of today's Ontario Vintages release. A blend of syrah and grenache, it's medium full-bodied and deliciously savoury, with hints of dried herbs, licorice and black pepper -- a terrific Côtes-du-Rhône even for those who aren't looking for things organic. It would make a good match for grilled or roasted chicken and hearty red-meat dishes. Domaines Perrin, incidentally, is the all-organic winery behind Château de Beaucastel -- one of the best Châteauneuf-du-Pape estates -- as well as the popular La Vieille Ferme line of budget-priced wines from southern France.
