Wine Notes:  Comments on 1997 vintage: Powerful, muscular red, with loads of ripe plum, berry and dark cherry flavors. Notes of tobacco box and bittersweet chocolate on the finish. Needs at bit more time to smooth out the edges. Best from 2003 through 2006. 500 cases imported. (Source: Wine Spectator, May 15, 2002). 'Vinha Grande' is made from grapes one normally associates with Port: Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa and Tinto Barroca. The resulting dry wines tend to be deeply coloured and very robust. This is a wine that is made only in the best years. For example, the winery did not make this wine in 1998. Our panel's tasting note: Deep ruby colour with aromas of berry, plum leather, cedar/new oak and fresh sage. Dry, balanced, fairly big wine. Medium-bodied with a lingering finish. Food match: pork roast. (Source: Vintages, May 2003).
