1999Andretti WineryCabernet   10  WE-91
Yes, the winery is owned by legendary race car driver Mario Andretti. As the winery says, it is ironic that a man who made his living driving 200 mph would be devoted to something that cannot be rushed: winemaking. Our panel's tasting note: Deep ruby colour with aromas of cassis and black cherry. Dry, good aroma replays, some nice dusty tannins, medium full-bodied with a good 'grippy' finish. Food match: pheasant with a wine reduction sauce. (Source: Vintages, January 11, 2003 release) Wine Spectator comments on the 1997 vintage: A bit austere, but the flavors of black currants, herbs and toasty oak stand up to the dry tannins. Drink now through 2004. 2,600 cases made. (Source: Wine Spectator, October 31, 2000).

Took this to Il Cantuccio in Northern Liberties Feb 2006. Nice enough little wine, nothing too complex.

Tasted 12/05 - did not decant. Closed nose. Not that complicated, hints of cherry, plum.

Wine Spectator: "Harmonious, with fine intensity to black currant, green olive and fresh herb tones that fold into cedary oak, coffee undertones and firm tannins on the finish.

90 POINTS "You never quite know what you're getting in a "Pet", but in this case the wine rises to the height of what the variety can do. It's very dark, and absolutely dry, with substantial tannins although it's soft in acidity. The flavors are ripe and rich. They range from black cherries through blackberries, coffee and chocolate, with a sprinkling of white pepper." Wine Enthusiast, November 15, 2004

2003Carlei Sergio's BlendShiraz   1  IWC - 88
IWC - “Medium red. Aromas of spices, bitter cherry, ground coffee, dried rose, black pepper, smoked meat and bacon fat are quintessentially syrah. A nicely concentrated midweight, with no undue fat. Tangy, fresh and vibrant in the mouth, with brisk red berry, tobacco and pepper flavors. Finishes bright, with fine-grained tannins.”

''rated 87-88. a dark ruby color...the wine is stylish, graceful, and easy to drink and understand...an expressive wine aromatically...it should age well for 10-12 years.''RP

2000Chateau MontelenaCabernet   1
"Montelena’s 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa exhibits plenty of sweet black currant fruit along with bright notes of black cherries, minerals and dried herbs. The addition of 25% Merlot from the estate’s vineyard softened the wine and gave it more texture as well as charm. It will be delicious upon release, and drink well for 10-12 years."
1995Château Pichon-Longueville BaronBordeaux   1  RP-90
Parker : A stylish, elegant, more restrained style of Pichon Baron, with less obvious new oak than usual, this deep ruby/purple-colored wine offers a pure black currant-scented nose with subtle aromas of coffee and smoky toasty oak. In the mouth, the wine displays less weight and muscle than the 1996, but it offers suave, elegant, rich fruit presented in a medium to full-bodied, surprisingly lush style.

2002Dry CreekCabernet   1  WE-91
WE: This is DCV's first Cab made entirely of Dry Creek fruits. It's a big, dark, dry wine, rich in dusy tannins, with an astringent finish. Doesn't seem drinkable now, bu such is the core of dark stone fruits, I suspect it has a great future. Hold beyond 2007. "

1/2/06 - Alas, this one seemed to be past its prime. Leather and a touch of spice on the nose, but the fruit was muted, adding just a touch of the peppery zin flavor at the end.

Bought at the winery Nov 2005. Our New Year's Eve sparkler, we enjoyed it with caviar prior to dinner. Lovely pear, light lemon peel taste, with a slight nutty undertone Delicious.
2004Hess CollectionChardonnay   8
Bought case 12/05. Served at JCS party - lovely Chardonnay that does not taste over-oaked, probably due to their use of only 1/3 new oak and the rest older barrels.

Opened Janaury 2006. Actually, a much better wine than I anticipated based on my prior tastings from this winery. Some nice fruit, but not an overloaded bomb.

12/05 - Thank you, 1996, for reminding me what Silver Oak *should* taste like, after the poor showing of your younger sibling, 1997. Nice cedar, currant, dill nose and deep, smooth chocolate, cassis taste with a touch of mint.
1997Silver OakCabernet   10
12/05 - Disappointing. Decanted for one hour, and while there was structure, the fruit was pretty much non-existant. Bricking a little around the edges, the wine was thin with a bit of a hot finish.

Best Value designation from the Wine Spectator and this review: "This chewy red offers juicy cherry and plum flavors against a backdrop of game and chocolate notes. The tannins are ripe and well-integrated, the finish long and peppery. Drink now through 2007."
