2015 Alejandro Fernández Tinto Pesquera ReservaTempranillo VK2 G1, G2 Br: 2025 - 203047.952  94
After some ups and downs in quality in recent years, it's a pleasure to see Pesquera back on form, given its role in the history of Ribera del Duero. This is clean, modern and well balanced, showing subtle coconut and vanilla-scented American oak, fine-tannins, succulent red berry fruit and the concentration and acidity to age further in the bottle. Drink date: 2020-2028. Ribera del Duero Top 100 Special Report 2019. Score - 94. (Tim Atkin, MW, timatkin.com, 2019)

Sur des arômes complexes de mures, cassis, notes torréfiées et fumées. Un vin puissant, riche, structure tanique élégante. A encaver Température de service : 17C De Ch-Ang: Made from a perfectly ripe crop, thanks to staggered picking, the wines are full of subtlety, charm and density. The colour is deep with light purple glints which are a sign of the wine’s ability to age well over the years. The aromas are reminiscent of black fruits, such as blackberries, spices and tobacco. The palate has lovely harmony; the first sensations are velvet, then the mid-palate develops with a well balanced structure. Notes of freshness come through in the finish reminding us of the presence of the Cabernet Franc with its elegance and subtlety, as well as its great ageing potential. Ageing potential : up to 2020

"Big and powerful for the vintage. Full-bodied, with loads of ripe fruit that turns to black pepper and sultana, with smoky oak and dark chocolate. Very long and opulent. On the edge of being too much, but it's impressive. A debut Brunello from this estate and one of the best from the vintage. Best after 2011. 850 cases made."

http://www.miguelmerino.com/english/vr99gb.html: A complex and expressive Reserva wine, the perfect match between fruit and oak from a great vintage. Lively cherry-red colour with bright hints. Mature fruit aromas (dry apricots, blackberries) along with spices from the oak (vanilla, black pepper, clove), and an earthy and balsamic background (eucalyptus, liquorice) from the soil. Bottled spring 2007 /// From cellartracker.com: Tasted by christhewino on 9/29/2011 & rated 90 points: This is beautiful. Aromas of cherries, vanilla, cloves and a little chocolate. The flavours are the same with a hint of liquorice. It is like a warm, liquid, black forest gateaux that just rests in your mouth almost floating over your tongue. Lovely stuff.

According to Robert Parker: "The 2001 Reserve de la Comtesse, is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 11% Cabernet Franc. The wine was produced from 43% of the production and reveals complex aromas of cedar, tobacco, and black currants with a hint of chocolate in the background. A sweet attack is followed by a ripe, supple effort that should drink well upon release, and last for 10-12 years."

Deep ruby. A complex, perfumed bouquet evokes dark berries, cola, smoked meat and mint. Supple and expansive on the palate, offering gently sweet blackberry and cherry-cola flavors that are firmed and lifted by juicy acidity. The smoky note repeats on the finish, which hangs on with very good tenacity and a whisper of fine-grained tannins. A fine effort for the vintage and delicious right now. Score - 91.   Alvear Pedro Ximenez 1927  VK318.951  RP 96
Montilla-Moriles producers have taken the Pedro Ximénez grape into areas that the neighbouring Jerez rarely attempts anymore. Over 70% of all they produce is made with this naturally sweet grape. These exceptional products are richly flavoured, very sweet and excellent companions for high-quality chocolate. For a treat, try drizzling over fresh fruit or ice cream. // The impressive 1927 Pedro Ximenez Solera, from a Solera begun nearly 80 years ago, boasts a dark amber color as well as an extraordinary nose of creme brulee, liquefied nuts, marmalade, and maple syrup. Huge and viscous, yet neither cloyingly sweet nor heavy, it is a profound effort priced unbelievably low. It is meant to be drunk alone at the end of a meal. This red blend - 90% Tempranillo, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon - opens with a richly perfumed bouquet of dark berry fruit, vanilla and floral aromas. It's well balanced, medium-full bodied with a textured mouth feel and flavour galore - racy red berry and sweet ripe red cherry adorned by spice and hints of toasty notes. There's a lip-smacking lingering finish that sets it up for a delightful pairing with meat and prawn paella. Score - 4 1/2 Stars (out of 5). (Vic Harradine, winecurrent.com, Dec. 2, 2014)

Classics: The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva is a good deal firmer and fresher than the 2007 Chianti Classico, as one might reasonably expect. The fruit moves towards the darker end of the spectrum and a dash of French oak contributes structure. Licorice and new leather nuances add complexity on the finish. As delicious as this is, it isn't significantly better than the straight 2007 Chianti Classico. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016. Score - 90. (Antonio Galloni, www.erobertparker.com, Aug. 2009)

The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino, a dark ruby, displays a perfumed nose along with dark fruit and scorched earth nuances on a structured, long frame supported by building tannins. Made in a style that is at once delicate and powerful, today it comes across as backward and austere in its expression. The 2001 Gran Reserva, from another superb vintage, spent 30 months in French and American oak. It reveals beautiful, nearly ethereal aromatics from its extended stay in barrel and bottle. Smoke, Asian spices, incense, violets, black cherry, and blackberry notes are followed by a round, silky wine of finesse. The 2004 Gran Reserva spent 30 months in French and American oak. It is a mouth-filling, opulent effort from the great 2004 vintage that straddles the line between traditional and modern-style Rioja. It offers up a soaring perfume of wood smoke, pencil lead, exotic spices, lavender, and blackberry that leads to a dense, impeccably balanced, lengthy effort that has the structure to evolve for 5-7 years while showing why 2004 is such an esteemed vintage in Rioja. Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW: Despite a slight mustiness on the nose, the wine shows richness and becomes a classic savoury feast. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Dusty rose and violet nose followed by a rich, supple palate – super delicate. Only Rioja can do this, and with American oak. The oak adds a grainy texture and complexity to the fruit. The finish is long, with a hint of spice. Pierre Mansour: Closed but layered, seriously stylish and focused. LCB: This blend of 90% Sangiovese with dashes of Merlot and Canaiolo in support was aged for 18 months in tonneaux (900-litre barrels) and large casks and then aged six month in bottle. This process keeps the fruit ahead of the oak influence, resulting in flavours of red berry, black cherry, herb and spice shining in a complex, elegant, balanced package with slightly drying tannins. Try this with rack of lamb, or ravioli with truffle cream sauce....wineEnthusiast: Red-skinned berry, dark spice and balsamic aromas are front and center on this structured red. Wn Crnt: Look for a great nose of dried fruit with tarry undertones, notes of violets and minerality followed by a smoky and earthy character. There’s abundant fruit on the palate which carries good acidity and an aggressively tannic structure. This full-bodied Barolo needs a few years in the cellar to allow the tannins to soften, but has all the components in place to achieve harmonious balance by about 2014. (MT) Vtges: This is a modern-styled Barolo that is just the ticket if you are looking for something to enjoy this evening. Filled with ripe berry fruit and truffle aromas, this Barolo is dry and fruity on the palate with gently caressing tannins (typical for this vintage) that give great support, but are not too hard. It's a fine match now, after decanting, to grilled game bird with truffle (or wild mushroom) risotto. It will also reward 5-7 years in a cellar. (VINTAGES panel, Sept. 2008) WPtr: This is a lovely Barolo, with all the depth, intensity and breadth that you expect. The flavours are concentrated and multi-layered, the tannins are ripe and supple, and the texture is both weighty and refreshing. Drink it with red meats cooked in an Italian style.

Not surprisingly, this estate's owner, the Rothschild family (who also owns Lafite-Rothschild), has been making significant investments in Duhart's winemaking facilities and vineyards. These investments helped create a blockbuster 2003 and 2005 as well as an outstanding 2006. Eliminating 50% of the crop produced a 1986-ish blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot exhibiting notes of creme de cassis, pain grille, black cherries, and undertones of loamy earth, herbs, and spice. Copious richness and up-front fruit (the latter a characteristic of the vintage) along with good freshness and liveliness suggest this Pauillac will be at its finest between 2012-2025. Score - 91-93. 2005 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial89% Tempranillo and 11% Mazuelo VK1 A1 A2 2014-203080.053  96
The 2005 Castillo de Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, a classic among classics, is back in top form with the excellent 2005 vintage. It’s produced from a blend of 89% Tempranillo and 11% Mazuelo (aka Carinena), a difficult grape that is in high esteem at the winery (they exceptionally produced a varietal Mazuelo in 2000 to celebrate their 150th anniversary) as they consider it adds acidity and aging potential to the blend and has been selected specifically to make part of the flagship wine’s blend. In 2005, the Tempranillo was harvested on September 30, the Mazuelo on October 3, and fermented separately in stainless steel vats. The Tempranillo ages in American oak barrels and the Mazuelo in French ones, both for a period of 30 months. The wine matures for a further two years in bottle before being released. It’s extremely backward and tight, showing very young, with a balanced nose between spice, tertiary and cherry fruit aromas. It’s a powerful, still young vintage, with plenty of glycerin, body, round tannins. An austere wine (is it the Mazuelo?), it is complex and ever-changing in the palate. It has a sense of harmony that only the best wines have. Very long and elegant. I loved its serious and austere overall feeling. 100,000 bottles produced. This is a true vin de garde which develops complex notes of violet and meat with time in the glass. This is a Gran Reserva greatly marked by the Mazuelo, which should give it great ability to age. At this quality level it represents very good value. Drink 2014-2030.

Owned by perfectionist Alain Vauthier (also the proprietor of Ausone), this brilliant sleeper of the vintage exhibits a dense ruby/purple color along with scents of crushed rocks, flowers, raspberries, blueberries, and licorice. Precise, medium-bodied, quintessentially elegant, flavorful, and broad, it should be one of the more accessible 2005s, and drink well for 10-15 years. Score - (89-91). (Robert Parker, April 2007) PREV Note: Alain Vauthier, who owns this small estate, has been ratcheting up the level of quality at Fonbel just as he has at his more well-known properties, Ausone and Moulin St.-Georges. The 2005 Fonbel offers an inky/purple color, sweet aromas of flowers, crushed rocks, blueberries, and cassis, a full-bodied palate, and loads of extract, glycerin, and sweet tannin. With a production of just under 1,700 cases, this dense ruby/purple-colored, 100% Merlot comes from proprietor Denis Barraud, one of St.-Emilion's rising stars. It is a wine of huge intensity, purity, richness, balance, and texture, but is not yet revealing much complexity. It appears to have the potential for 15+ years of longevity. Score - (91-93). Superbe vin. (06/08)

Consistent from bottle (I tasted it three times), this is an outstanding offering, although not quite at the prodigious level of the 2000. Civilized and approachable for a young Leoville-Barton, it exhibits a saturated plum/purple color along with classic Bordelais aromas of damp earth, creme de cassis, smoke, vanillin, and tobacco. Medium to full-bodied and rich, with high but well-integrated tannin, and a long, 40+ second finish, it should turn out to be a brilliant effort, and one of the stars of the Medoc. However, patience is essential. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020. Score - 92. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2004)

from 2006 FUTURES - This wine made from a specific, delimited part of Palmer's vineyard has started to gather a solid following. Please note it is not a second wine, but a distinctive and seperate vineyard plot. With 53% Cabernet and 41% Merlot, made from only 37 hls/ha, it is a full and fleshy wine with soft fruit characteristics evident from the Merlot. Very pretty, purely flavoured and attractive. Drink 2012-2018 IWC: (53% cabernet sauvignon, 41% merlot and 6% petit verdot) Bright ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of plum, mulberry, chocolate and animal fur. Sweet and reasonably deep, with good definition and energy. Finishes with fairly serious but nicely buffered tannins and very good length. This still needs some time to come together. RP: Tasted at the château. This is a very fine Alter Ego. A cool, mineral nose with blackberry, limestone and a scent of gravel and hedgerow. Very fine definition. The palate is quite attacking, racy acidity and a sharpness that lends this such lift and penetration. Very minerally with a silky smooth, very focused finish of blackberry, cedar and blueberries. More reserved that usual, but perhaps more sophisticated.

Readers looking for the bottled essence of Provence should check out the dark ruby/purple/plum-colored 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape, a brilliant blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, and 5% Cinsault aged in a combination of old foudres, concrete tanks, and small new oak barrels. Deep, broad, profound plum, fig, cassis, garrigue, and cherry notes are found in both the aromas and flavors, and as the wine sits in the glass, roasted meat blood juices also emerge. Rich and intense with silky tannins, this wine will be even better with another 1-2 years of bottle age, and should last for 15 or more years. Drink: 2010-2025. Score - 90. TASTING NOTES: This terroir is superbly situated between Beausejour Duffau and Beau-Sejour-Becot, with Angelus within shouting distance. Bellevue has been managed by Stephane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont since 2000, and when St.-Emilion does its next new classification (in 2016), I would not be surprised to see this estate upgraded to a premier grand cru classe. A blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, cropped at a remarkably low 30-36 hectoliters per hectare, the 2006 represents the essence of terroir with its crushed rock/steely notes intermixed with flower, black raspberry, cherry, and blackberry characteristics. It is a full-bodied, dense, rich, powerful, moderately tannic offering with a broad texture, sensational purity, and an exceptionally long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025+. Score – (92-94). Planted in deep Garonne gravel, this is sourced from vines of more than 30 years of age. The Bouteiller family worked this land for eight generations. Since 2009, it has been maintained by Paz Espejo. This 2000 is a fine example of maturing Bordeaux. Complex and layered, it retains some youthful fruit tones alongside the leather, dried fruit and earth tones. The tannins are well-integrated and provide a silky, almost caressing mouthfeel. This is drinking beautifully now, and will continue to evolve for another 3-5 years. (Vintages panel, Dec. 2017)

Wine DR: Chateau du Tertre (Margaux) 2001: A very good depth of colour here, and a slightly exotic, floral, rather nutty nose. Good weight on the palate, appealing depth of flavour, and with a very nicely proportioned structure. Creamy persistence on the finish. This has lovely style, and shows what an under-rated vintage this is. Looking back, I see I have rated this a little higher on this tasting. 17+/20 (November 2005) Chateau du Tertre (Margaux) 2001: Good colour, and a lovely nose of dense, floral, macerated black fruit. A well rounded palate with ripe fruit and a firm, nicely poised tannic structure. Very attractively put together. Correct acidity. Very approachable, needs four to six years I think. 16+/20 (May 2004) 89-91 points from the Wine Spectator… 'Lovely round wine, with a fine tannin structure and plenty of smoky, berry and currant character, yet subtle. Well-done. Same level of quality as 2000. (March-02)' Our notes - 50% Cab, 35% Merlot, 15% Cab Franc. Smoky, exotic aromas. Toasty flavors. Some mineral undertones. Flashy style. Wine Advocate: Broad and sexy, with supple tannin, the 2001 offers beguiling notes of toast, black currant liqueur, violets, and licorice in a seductive, opulent, medium to full-bodied, accessible style. It may deserve another point or two for pure pleasure. Proprietor Eric Albada Jelgersma is doing a splendid job rebuilding this estate and producing higher and higher quality wines. The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is a fleshy, radiant wine graced with expressive dark red fruit. This is a fairly plush style for this bottling, no doubt owing to the personality of the vintage. I don't quite see the delineation or structure of the superb 2006, but in exchange the 2007 is much more pleasing to drink young. Tobacco, sweet herbs, licorice and dark red cherries leave a very positive, lasting impression. The Marchese Antinori is predominantly Sangiovese, with a dollop of Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate's vineyards in Peppoli, Badia a Passignano and Tignanello. The darker color and flavor profile and presence of Cabernet relative to the 100% Sangiovese Badia a Passignano Riserva makes the Marchese a baby Tignanello of sorts. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020. An exceptionally complex Sèvre-et-Maine version that's been rested on the lees to add further dimension, this wine represents the pinnacle of achievement for Muscadet. Latest rendition of the Loire wine with the longest name as well as one of the region's most distinguished track records ... once again represents a sensational value. Scents of sea breeze; honeydew and musk melon; and fresh lemon lead into an expansive yet persistently refreshing palate, featuring rich hints of nut oils beneath bright, juicy, brine-crusted waves of melon and citrus. The finishing amalgam of musk melon, lemon, salt, chalk, and chicken stock is invigorating and lip-smacking as well as strikingly tactile in its sense of minerality ... It's not just pure power, however; the wine has a sense of proportion and refinement, while excellent palate structure, and abundant but ripe tannins should see this through considerable positive evolution; I'd say this needs another 4-6 years or so to resolve, at which point this should be a remarkable bottle of wine. A dynamic '06 red, from a terrific small grower, that proves that the vintage wasn't just great for the whites. Filled with aromas of raspberry, black cherry, oak spice and savoury herbs, this beautifully made, long-finishing Pinot Noir is an ideal choice for current consumption or mid-term cellaring (3-5 years). Its vibrant upfront fruit easily balances out the tannins to create a wine that will be pleasant tonight with grilled lamb chops. (VINTAGES panel, July 2008) WnCrnt: Owner/winemaker Chantal Tortochot has revived this grand estate and fashioned a well-structured flavourful ’06. The quiet nose delivers cinnamon and toasty notes while the flavours are in the sweet red fruit zone—raspberry, cherry and strawberry. It’s light on its feet and finishes clean and crisp with a good underpinning of ripe supple tannin. It needs a couple of years if sipped, but it’s ready to go now with food. Pair with coq au vin or stuffed pork tenderloin. (VH)

A cherry pink-red hue in the glass. Often when tasted at this stage in its evolution I have found Vieux Télégraphe to be rather simple in its aromatics, but this wows me with wild notes of garrigue and aromatic herbs on top of the usual sweet fruit. It has a very soft entry onto the palate despite this, but then reveals a well composed supple melding of ripe tannins, well covered by fruit, with a good acid backbone as well. There is true character here too. Great potential, a fine vintage for the Bruniers I think. The 2007 Vieux Telegraphe may be the greatest wine made at this property since the 2005 and 1998. Dense ruby/purple-tinged with an exquisite nose of salty sea breezes, licorice, ground pepper, jammy black cherries, black currants, figs, and plums, this is a full-bodied, rich, Provencal-styled offering with lots of sweet, ripe tannin. R Parker: Performing considerably better than it did prior to bottling, the 2010 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape is one of the all-time great Vieux Telegraphes I have tasted in the last 3+ decades. I believe it is even superior to the 2007, which I had several weeks ago. From Faustino.com: enough to allow us to choose for this tasting the best vintages of the brand, starting with the mythical and immortal 1964. We have found that, when this red is subjected to ageing for more than 24 months in casks, it improves substantially in the bottle over time, to a far greater extent than more reducing wines that have spent less time in casks. The tasting was carried out with the following vintages of FAUSTINO I: 1964, 1970, 1982, 1994, 1995 and 1996. /// Tasting note - FAUSTINO I 1964 GRAN RESERVA (95 points) In view of the experience with this and other brands, we can say that the 64 vintage is undoubtedly the best of the century. Particularly because we are assessing it when it is 40 years old yet still looking forward to a long life. Dark cherry-red with a tawny rim. Powerful, spicy aromas with a rich gamut of nuances from long ageing in casks and in the bottle (wax, incense, roasted nuts, cigar box). Full and ample in the mouth, with the exceptional expression of a classic Rioja and excellent acidity; velvety, with an elegant, spicy finish.Review 2: Brown-red colour. More brown and lighter than the 70. Fine nose. Here is the intensity that the ’70 lacks. More mushroomy, wet forest floor-notes. Hints of old wood, red berries. Complex and a really fine Rioja. Medium bodied and evolved in the mouth. Some sweetness in the fruit. Mushrooms, wet forest floor, some old wood, herbaciousness and red berries. Fine intensity. Complex fruit. This has evolved very nicely. Medium acids and still some tannins left in the finish. Good length. Great Rioja that drinks on top now. Arnt Egil Nordlien Tasting note: June-09

One of the most recognizable bottles of Rioja is the 2004 Faustino I Gran Reserva, mostly Tempranillo with 9% Graciano 9% and 5% Mazuelo (Cariñena), aged for 26 months in oak barrels. The nose is as classical as it gets, with tertiary aromas of bonfire, paprika, cured meat, leather and spices, highly recognizable as Rioja, clean and balanced, a big improvement over the 2001 I tasted last time. The palate is medium-bodied and polished with a fine texture, good acidity and persistence. This is subtle, with well-integrated oak. It is a textbook Rioja Gran Reserva. The purple-colored 2006 Tinto is made up of 86% Tempranillo and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot aged for 16 months in French oak. The nose displays a brooding aromatic array of Asian spices, damp earth, mineral, blackberry, and violets. Dense and stacked on the palate, the wine is still a bit tightly wound and will benefit from 4-6 years of additional cellaring. Fonseca note: Inky purple colour. Complete nose, with impressive depth and background, displaying the concentrated and opulent fruitiness which is the hallmark of the Fonseca style. Rich blackcurrant and plum aromas overlaid with spicy and floral notes. Full bodied and velvety on the palate, with ripe chewy tannins providing frim grip to support the long fruity finish..... Neal Martin www.erobertparker.com May 2009 – 95 points "The millennial Fonseca is still a young pup. It has rich blackberry, cassis and liquorice-scented nose with a touch of saddle-leather, fruitcake and earth. The palate has sensuous entry, beautifully integrated tannins, seamless and caressing with blackberry, black olive compote, fig and a touch of damson jam. Lovely sense of natural balance and poise but yet to shed its puppy fat. Quintessential Fonseca really."

3 - 7 ans Assez ferme dans sa jeunesse, il s'harmonise à merveille en vieillissant. In the 1950s, the Schenk family established their wine estate and négociant business in Savigny-lès-Beaune; they chose the name Henri de Villamont as a tribute to a 'Knight of the Order of Malta' whose family owned most of the vineyards there from 1256 until 1655. Pommard is reputed to be the source of the Côte de Beaune's most powerful Pinot Noirs and this one, which hails from the great 2005 vintage, holds great promise.

La " Cuvée des Cadettes " est le nom donné à une cuvée du Château La Nerthe par le Commandant Ducos, et repris en 1986. Son nom provient d'une très ancienne parcelle de la propriété. L'élevage se déroule en fûts neufs exclusivement....“Cuvée des Cadettes” Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2005 : 96 Point “Monumental” Robert Parker …94 Points Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar…95 Point “Attention-Grabbing” Wine Spectator...“The Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Cadettes was one of the first luxury cuvees of old vines made in Chateauneuf du Pape, the first vintage originating in 1972. There are usually anywhere from 500 to 1000 cases of it. A real stunner, and just being released on the market, is the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Cadettes. A magnificent wine with deep ruby/purple color, a wonderfully sweet focus, aromatics of blue and black fruits intermixed with graphite, a hint of charcoal, and some earth and subtle Provencal herbs, the wine is full-bodied and has great depth, richness, power, and stature. There is plenty of tannin to shed, as one might expect from a top 2005, but it is well-integrated, and there is more than enough concentration and fruit to balance out the wine’s structural profile. Give this wine 5 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades. This is a monumental example of Chateauneuf du Pape.” 96 points, Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate “Inky ruby. Exotic, opulent aromas of dark berry and cherry preserves, licorice, incense and potpourri. Extremely rich but at the same time lithe and precise, offering sweet, deep raspberry, blueberry and candied floral flavors, plus strong mineral lift. Tannins gain strength on the finish, which leaves behind a wide swath of sweet dark fruits.”94 points, Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar

The great Nebbiolo-based wines of Barolo rarely come at this fine a price, so this is the perfect opportunity to sample this prime example of a Piedmontese classic. A good complexity to the aromas with black fruit, wood and spice, plus a lifted note of roses. The palate is dry and ripe with firm tannins that are kept in balance by the depth of fruit. More spice notes with leather and redcurrant also present. Ideal for hearty mid-winter fare such as beef stew. It’s also cellarable 2-4+ years. (VINTAGES panel, April 2011) Nat Maclean: Who said a good Barolo needs to cost $50+ to be enjoyable? A perfect wine choice for the winter. Since 2007 was a classic vintage (RP rewarded it 97!) in this region and Natalie gave this 2007 La Pieve Barolo (as well as their 2005) a generous 92, I’d recommend buying 3-6 bottles and consume it over the next 5-10 years – what a great GPCi !

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 90 "Full red. Deep, smoky aromas of raspberry, cherry, tobacco, underbrush and mocha. Sweet and silky, offering open-knit red fruit flavors complicated by suave baking spices and vanilla bean. Finishes with lingering red fruits and spices." An earthier style of Cigare than previous editions, the 2005 shows a deep ruby robe with bright purple highlights. Aromas of spiced meat, kirsch, mushrooms, a soupçon of truffle and dark chocolate make for a richly perfumed red wine. Flavors of earthy red fruit, cocoa beans and sweet spice, balanced with moderate acidity, slightly crunchy tannins and a generous, even voluptuous texture with a long, savory finish. This wine has the structure to age well and shows more French oak than is normal for us. Quite delicious, yet clearly serious and stylistically, very Old World. Ages until kids are out of the house. As of this date (Feb. 5, 2009), the wine has definitely begun to close up shop - not a cause for despair, but an indication of its great ageing potential.

This wine is composed of a selection the Maret family makes from their holdings in one of the great sites in all of Chateauneuf du Pape, the lieux-dit known as La Crau. The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hautes Brusquieres Cuvee Speciale is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah. The Grenache is aged in large oak foudres and most of the Syrah in smaller barrels. This fabulous, inky/ruby/purple-tinged wine offers up sweet, jammy aromas of black raspberries, licorice, truffles, underbrush, and Provencal herbs. It is the deepest colored of these four wines, and is also profoundly rich and layered, with sweet tannins as well as refreshing vibrancy and acidity. The 2010 Lindes de Remelluri Vinedos de San Vicente is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Viura and Malvasia purchased from a number of vine growers from San Vicente de la Sonsierra. In the past these grapes were blended with the ones grown on the Remelluri estate vineyards. The 2010 is very aromatic, more fruit forward, with some grainy tannins, slightly more rustic than the one produced with grapes purchased in Labastida. The oak is perfectly folded into the nose and palate of the wine, which remains very fresh and approachable. Drink 2015-2020. Score - 91. (Luis Gutierrez, erobertparker.com, Dec. 2013)

(Translated from the Italian): It has been a long time since a Chianti has so appealed to the senses. Gorgeous with rich and fleshy purplish fruit and an intense colour. Silky with pure blackberry and a vein of sweet spices. Careful attention to detail has resulted in no loss of freshness to oxidation and no loss of purity or character through the winemaking process. Floral notes combine with wild forest touches. Creamy, warm and long. Exceptional harmony. One of the best Chianti Classico. Score - 97. (lucamaroni.com, 2018)

: To many wine experts, 1994 is Rioja´s best vintage ever since mythic 1964. It was marked by a very hot summer, with some storms that brought sufficient rain for a normal development of the growth cycle in Rioja Alta. The grapes arrived at the winery in a perfect state of health and the ideal degree of ripeness to make wine. They presented the best conditions we could expect for making our first wine ever.

Mitolo’s Serpico – a Cabernet made from grapes that are air-dried, Amarone-style for five weeks – is utterly superb.//The 2008 Serpico was made in the Amarone method from grapes picked at around 12.5% and semi-dried slowly, finishing at around 15% alcohol. In 2008 it managed to side-skirt the heat as it was picked early. It was matured for 9 months in 100% new barriques, 90% French. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it gives pronounced notes of creme de cassis, Christmas cake, plum pudding, anise, cassia and nutmeg. Orange-red with a pale rim. Mature aromas of strawberry, meat, leather and truffle. Old-style, slightly funky Rioja flavors of pungent strawberry, leather and baking spices; lovely acidity gives the wine a juiciness and impressive inner-mouth lift. Pesquera Reserva 2008's color is deeper still with an intense, complex aroma of spice and dark fruit and a satiny texture. (Eunice Fried, globaltravelerusa.com, July 1, 2012) from Vinisimus: Although this wine will not reach its peak for 4 or 5 years, nevertheless it presently puts in a more than satisfactory performance. In good form and with considerable character, on the nose the predominant aromas are of ripe fruit and fine toast coming over elegantly from top-quality oak, spices (vanilla) and mineral notes. When first on the palate it feels dry and silky, but immediately there is an explosion of ripe fruit (cranberries) with mineral hints and touches of coffee and tobacco. Deep red. Spicy, smoke-tinged cherry and red berry scents are complemented by suggestions of incense and vanilla. Smoky black raspberry and cherry liqueur flavors are lifted and energized by a mineral element. Sappy, incisive and fresh on the finish, firmed by supple, well-knit tannins. Drink: 2019-2024. Ruby with a bright rim. Lively, expansive aromas of red berry preserves, floral pastilles and vanilla, with a smoky mineral overtone. Seamless and sweet on the palate, offering juicy raspberry and cherry flavors sharpened by juicy acidity and a hint of white pepper. Finishes sappy, precise and very long, with smooth, harmonious tannins. This wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in used American oak for three years. Drinking window: 2018-2025. Bright ruby. Vibrant, spice-accented cherry and blackcurrant scents pick up a floral topnote and a hint of vanilla with air. Smoky and broad on the palate, offering appealingly sweet black and blue fruit and mocha flavors that slowly deepen on the back half, with no loss of energy. Shows very good delineation for its heft. Supple tannins frame lingering boysenberry and spicecake qualities on a long, spicy finish that shows no rough edges. Drinking window: 2019-2029. Score - 92. (Josh Raynolds, vinous.com, Feb. 2019)

Aromas of blackberries and coffee follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. A beauty. Very fine. Best after 2008. Score - 93. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, Oct. 15, 2005) Stephen Tanzer: Bright red-ruby. More dark fruits than red on the nose, with musky notes of chicory and espresso. Sweet, broad and full, with thorough ripeness if a bit less lift than the Giachini. Less noble but very ripe, with powerful fruit and a liqueur-like sweetness on the back. Finishes with terrific breadth and major tannins. This, too, needs a good five or six years of patience. (2004)

The 2005 Eric Stevens Purbrick Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet in color with intense cassis and mint aromas over subtler notes of pencil shavings, truffles, soy and black olive. Tightly knit, the condensed palate is finely constructed with medium-high acid and a firm level of grainy tannins. Still appearing very youthful, this wine should be at its best from 2014-2024+."

Even better than the three single vineyard offerings is the 2003 Malbec Tributo Felipe Villafañe. The wine was sourced from a vineyard planted in 1948. Purple colored, it has an expressive nose of pain grille, scorched earth, licorice, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. The wine has exceptional depth, layers of spicy black fruit flavors, and enough stuffing to evolve for 8-10 years. This intense effort has a 60+ second finish. It should effortlessly make old bones, providing pleasure through 2035 at the least. Congratulations to Trapiche for some fantastic Malbecs at friendly prices. 2007 Travaglini GattinaraNebbiolo VK1 D1, D2 2013-201729.953  2/3 glass 89RP es
Beginning to show some maturity, the nose here has touches of saddle leather, dried cranberry and cherry pie layered on sour cherry, pomegranate and cinnamon notes. The tannins are quite sinewy and are softening nicely around a core of plentiful red fruit. Try this with a charcuterie platter or a rabbit stew. (VINTAGES panel, March 2013)....Wine Advocate: "The 2007 Gattinara bursts from the glass with sweet red cherries, tobacco, incense and grilled herbs. There is an immediacy to the 2007 that is quite appealing. At the same time, the firm Nebbiolo tannins are present and serve to balance the wine’s more overt leanings. I very much like the way the 2007 continues to open up in the glass. Overall this looks to be a tasty, early-drinking Gattinara from Travaglini."

2003 d'Arenberg The Galvo GarageBordeaux Red Blends from South Australia VK1 B1, B2 Br 2011-201433.001  James Halliday,92, RP 90
Upon release, d'Arenberg's Galvo Garage has a deep, vibrant red-purple color. The nose shows a complex array of blackcurrant, cassis, compost, mulberries, dark plums, cherries and cut flower stems. Subtle spices of cinnamon, nutmeg and cedar add complexity and show a potential for the wine to open more with time. The wide array of fruits are seen immediately upon tasting and flow elegantly across the mouth in a silky way, gradually tightening in dark, fragrant, compost and lively, dark-berry fruit tannins. The Bordeaux-like tannins are fine and plentiful, with an abundance of intertwined fragrant fruit hanging in the mouth well after the wine has been consumed. A very refreshing but classically styled wine that should age gracefully for many years. As the wine ages, the fruit character will develop and become beautifully truffled with cigarbox flavors, while maintaining the compost and dark fragrant fruits. The fine tannins will become subtler, making the fruit character even more prominent.

Robert Parker, Jr.-The Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Gran Reserva 904 is Tempranillo from Brinas, Labastida and Villalba balanced with 10% Graciano from Briones and Rodezno. The grapes were fermented and macerated in inox vats for 14 days at 28º C, and malolactic fermentation lasted 28 days. The wine aged for 4 years in used American oak barrels averaging 4 years old, during which time it was manually racked 8 times. 150,000 bottles were filled. This 2004, from a superb vintage shows a beautiful light red color with a brick rim and a superb nose redolent of balsamic woods, spices, leather, well-hung meat, incense and truffles. The light to medium-bodied palate shows fully resolved tannins, great acidity and pure, pungent flavors that linger in the mouth forever and that can only be Rioja. This is a wine to smell over and over again. It might sound like an exaggeration, but this wine is still too young and you should wait a little bit and drink the superb 2001 vintage which should still be available on the market while this one matures in bottle. At this quality level the price is superb especially considering that the wine is being released 10 years after the vintage. Drink 2016-2024.

In what La Rioja Alta considers the greatest years (there have been three to date, 2001, 1973, and 1964) the wine is called Reserva Especial. The current release is the 2001 Reserva Especial, a deeply colored wine with a lovely perfume of cinnamon, lavender, incense, balsamic, and black cherry. Medium-bodied, velvety-textured, and already complex, it will continue to evolve for another 5-10 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2036. For those seeking immediate gratification, it has the virtue of being approachable now. Vintages/Jan2013: TASTING NOTE: Deep red. Sexy, intensely perfumed bouquet of ripe raspberry and cherry with suggestions of potpourri, sandalwood and vanilla. Shows more power and darker fruits on the palate, picking up a touch of singed plum that adds a serious quality to the sweet black raspberry and cherry flavors without costing the wine any of its vibrancy. The long, sweet finish hangs on with very good tenacity. Score: 92 (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, Sept./Oct. 2010)

1995Nath. Johnston & Fils CH LA DOMINIQUEMerlot  109.00   RP 89
While 1995 is also a tannic vintage for LA Dominique, there is sweeter fruit as well as more ripeness and intensity (at least at present (’98)) in the wine’s moderately intense nose of vanillin, blackberry and raspberry fruit. In the mouth, there is good sweetness, medium to full body, moderate tannin, and a layered, rich, classic tasting profile. Anticipated maturity 2003-2016. SCORE 89. (Robert Parker Jr, Feb 1998)

2006Vega Sicilia AlionTempranillo VK2 N2 Br 2015-202673.752  RP 94 (Jay Miller)
The 2006 Alion, aged in 100% new French oak, is a saturated purple color with a fetching bouquet of sandalwood, smoke, Asian spices, incense, and black cherry confiture. In the mouth it has outstanding volume, kinky spice notes, savory black fruits, and enough fine-grained tannin to evolve for another 5-7 years. Its drinking window will extend from 2015 to 2031. Score - 94. (Jay Miller, www.erobertparker.com, June 2010)
1998W & J Graham & Co., Malvedos Vintage PortPort VK3 D2 Br 2014-3051.951
To 'call' a vintage port year is a producer's stamp of approval; a declaration that what they have produced is exceptional. In some years only a few Port houses 'call the year', as Graham's did in 1998. The wines produced from their single Malvedos vineyard were superb and therefore worthy of the designation. The one fantastic advantage to sampling ports from vintages not universally declared is that they are frequently much more approachable in their youth than generally called years. Ageable for 4+ years or more, this can also be enjoyed tonight, decanted, with mature cheeses and nuts.

Cellar contains 442 bottles, 209 wines, 226 entries
