2001Allegrini Palazzo Della TorreValpolicella Costco202  90WS
WS: Densely packed on the nose, with currants, flowers, mineral and oak. Medium- to full-bodied, with spicy dried fruit flavors, firm tannins and a long, minerally finish. Vintner: This blend of 70% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella and 5% Sangiovese is a smooth, full-bodied cru made in an innovative ripasso style. 70% of the grapes picked are vinified immediately. The remaining 30% are left to dry until the end of December when they are vinified and re-fermented with the wine from the fresh grapes. The result is higher alcohol content, rounder style, lower acidity and more extraction than a Valpolicella Classico."
2001Antinori TignanelloCabernet Medical Metrics801  91WS
SuperTuscan: Loads of blackberry, coffee and olive aromas. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, subtle yet rich finish. A fine Tignanello that shows reserve and class. Best after 2007."
2004Argiolas Costera Isola Dei NuraghiCannonau Costco161  91WA
"Readers looking for an Italian version of Chateauneuf du Pape should check out the 2004 Costera. Made from the Sardinian clone of Grenache called Cannonau, Carignan and Bovale Sardo, it is a chunky, robust, meaty effort revealing scents of garrigue, kirsch liqueur, white chocolate, pepper and spice. Full-bodied, with terrific fruit as well as loads of personality, it should be enjoyed over the next several years." Made from 90% Cannonau, 5% Carignano and 5% Bovale Sardo grown in the Costera vineyard. The wine is aged in French barriques for 6-8 months prior to bottling. The intense, ruby red color tends toward orange with age. The full bouquet displays typical varietal character. Warm and full bodied on the palate with excellent texture, ripe fruit flavors and pleasant tannins.
2001Arnaldo Caprai Montefalco RossoSangiovese/Sagrantino Spec's213  90WA
Montefalco, an attractive hill town in central Umbria not far from Spoleto, makes very good Sangiovese, and the 2001 Montefalco Rosso maintains the reputation is has already established. The aromas of red currants, black cherries, and violets are unmistakably those of high class Sangiovese, as is the vigor and freshness, the firm structure, the focused fruit, and the light tannins which add definition and focus on the palate. Drink: 2005-2012.
2000ArtessaPinot Noir house202  WS86,CG87

Firm and intense, with a ripe, rich, vibrant core of spicy currant, wild berry, beef carpaccio, dusty sage and berry, ending with a rich boysenberry aftertaste that's quite complex. Drink now through 2008. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
2003Beckmen Cuvee Le BecRed Wine Blend Spec's151  ST88
Smoky, musky aromas of animal fur and espresso, lifted by oaky and floral notes. Then sweet and nicely vinous in the mouth, with raspberry and pepper flavors showing restrained sweetness. Finishes with sweet, dusty tannins and very good length. A very successful blend of grenache, syrah, mourvedre and counoise.
2002Bergstrom Bergstrom Vinyard Pinot NoirPinot Noir House602  WS93
Remarkably dense in color, almost opaque, but it's not heavy-handed at all. The texture is supple, centering on fresh dark plum with hints of cherry and sassafras, wrapped in fine-grained tannins as the flavors linger impressively. Drink now through 2012. 225 cases made. (HS)

1997Bertani Amarone RiservaAmarone Verona461
The wine has a deep, dark garnet colour. The classical cherry flavours of Amarone are immediately perceptible to the nose, with the preponderant notes of Marasca and sour cherry. The wine presents a great variety of characters, from fresh fruit to jamlike tones, which offer a very harmonious aftertaste, alternating with spicy elements.

2001Bussola Valpolicella Classico SuperiorezzRed Wine Lenny 050806 Dinner39
50% Corvina, 40% Rondinella, 10% Molinara. The grapes were pressed towards the middle of October and the fermentation processes were started immediately with selected yeasts. The product was left to ferment at room temperature then drawn off from a vat after fifteen days with a sugary residue of 40 grams per liter. In February it is left to re-ferment for a week on the grape dregs of the Amarone wine. It is then drawn off from a vat again and transferred from the grape dregs after ten days. It was then decanted in Allier, Tronche, Nevers and Voges barriques, of second passing. After being left in wood for twenty-seven months, it was mustered and subjected to a light clarification process with egg albumin. It was bottled in September 2004 and left to refine for three more months before being brought to market.
Dark fruit flavors, but with persistent acidity suggesting longer cellaring would be needed.

2003Cantine del Notaio La FirmaAglianico Italy392  92ST
Deep, dark ruby-red. Offers a plethora of aromas, ranging from ripe bing cherry and dark plum to mocha, coffee bean and a hint of smoke. Rich and immensely sweet on the palate, it avoids the overextraction of some other aglianicos made in this very hot vintage. Offers great concentration of ripe fruit with silky tannins that do not overpower the palate. - Tanzer. DiWine: The wine shows an intense ruby red color and nuances of ruby red, little transparency. The nose reveals intense, clean, pleasing, refined and elegant aromas which start with hints of blackberry, black cherry and plum followed by aromas of violet, vanilla, tobacco, black currant, licorice, carob, black pepper, mace and menthol. The mouth has good correspondence to the nose, a tannic attack and however balanced by alcohol, full body, intense flavors. The finish is persistent with flavors of black cherry, plum and blackberry. A well made wine. La Firma ages in cask for 12 months followed by 4 months of aging in bottle.

A custom cuvee for the American importer, the 19,000-case 2003 Mas Donnis Barrica was aged ten months in both American and French oak. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by sumptuous aromas of blueberries, black currants, cold steel, and minerals. Evocative of a baby Priorat, it possesses an amazing fragrance, considerable nobility as well as complexity, medium to full body, and a long, concentrated, heady finish. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years."
2001Casa Castillo MonastrellMourvedre Spec's122  WA89
Very dark ruby in color, almost black, it breathes ripe, plummy fruit aromas with a whiff of the earthy "tree bark" that's characteristic of the grape. Full and tart, lemon-squirt acidity and rough tannins surround ample black fruit flavors. It's a bit wild and rustic, but food tames it.

2002Castano SolaneraTempranillo Costco 1  WA90
a formidably endowed, chunky, rich, chocolatey, melted licorice, blackberry and black currant-scented wine. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by a medium to full-bodied red with loads of texture, and a luscious mid-palate revealing notions of scorched earth and black fruits. It is a sizeable effort with extremely ripe tannin, something only old vine, late harvested Mourvedre can achieve. It is a custom cuvee created only for the American marketplace, so bottles sold in Europe and in the grey market will be completely different. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years, although my instincts suggest it will last longer
2001Castello di Fonterutoli SiepiSangiovese Costco501  WA93,WS92
Winery notes: The color is brilliant and concentrated purple. A very intense aroma penetrates the senses, the wine is toasty and smoky along with explosive notes of red fruit and aromatic herbs, thyme in particular. Tannins are concentrated and sweet, but without the slightest sign of toughness or hardness. A long finish accentuates the experience. WA 93 Pts. - The superior level of 2001 compared to its immediate predecessor could not be more obvious in the 2001 Siepi, a pioneering Sangiovese-Merlot blend and still a touchstone for this category in Tuscany. Very ripe and sweet on the nose, with an important and balanced contribution of cloves, cedar, and cinnamon from the oak, it is lush, fleshy, and succulent in flavor, well supported by silky tannins but with an inner core of strength which promises fine drinking until 2016-2018. WS 92 Pts. - Luscious blackberry, blueberry and milk chocolate aromas. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long, caressing finish. A beauty. Best after 2006.

13% Merlot; 4% Cabernet Franc; 4% Petit Verdot. Top-shelf Cabernet is rarely a charmer in its formative years, and, while this one is admittedly a little rough around the edges, it is also spot on in terms of its very deep fruit, its near-classic structure and its judicious use of sympathetic oak. Even now showing a fine sense of layering to its involving, slightly loamy, cassis-laden flavors, it is still a shadow of what it will most certainly become, and it continues the winery's impressive string of well-made and highly recommended red wines.

2002 Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux: Very pale color. Pungent aromas of grapefruit, pineapple, quinine, mint and spices. Extremely dense and intensely flavored, with terrific racy acids framing and extending the grapefruit and spice flavors. Uncommonly fresh in the middle and tactile on the back end. Perhaps less rich than the superb 2000 but with even stronger acidity and equal persistence. 90-93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/Jun 03

2001Chateau Monbousquet St. Emilion Grand CruBordeaux Medical Metrics175  92-95WA
The 2001 is an amazingly concentrated effort for the vintage. Yields were 30 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine was fermented in small steel as well as oak vats. It was aged in 100% new oak, and will be bottled with neither fining nor filtration. The blend is 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine offers smoky, super-ripe, jammy red and black fruits that are almost candied in their ripeness and sweetness. The wine is infused with notes of espresso, smoke, charcoal, and pain grill. This is a rich, exotic, opulent, and pure effort. Nevertheless, it possesses plenty of tannin as well as more definition than most young vintages of Monbousquet. Is it better than the 2000, 1999, or 1998? I don't see how it can be, and it is too soon to say for sure, but it is certainly in the same qualitative league."
2002Chateau Montelena Montelena Estate ZinfandelzzZinfandel Stan23   WA91
The 2002 Zinfandel is a blend of 96.6% Zinfandel, 1.5% Syrah, 1% Petit Syrah, and .9% Viognier. I like the idea of Viognier since I think it will uplift the aromatics, and although it is hard to believe that tiny amount could have given this wine a more exotic component to the aromatics, it does display an exuberant, ostentatious nose of red and black fruits intermixed with flowers, frying lard, and a hint of peaches. Lush, ripe, heady, and rich, this hedonistic effort will provide delicious drinking over the next 5-7 years.(Wine Advocate)

2003Cline Ancient Vines MourvedreMourvedre Spec's152
Winery Notes: Our Ancient Vines Mourvdre, grown in the warm, sandy soils of Oakley California, produces a wine that has a distinct chocolate character. The tannins are soft and the wine has good weight in the mouth. Flavors and aromas of cherry and mint help make this delicious wine an unusual delight. RP Imports: However, this one exhibits a bounty of cherry and blueberry fruit with a generous bouquet of violets and chocolate. The soft tannin and distinct alcohol give it a medium body. Good complement to pasta and lamb.

There is not much to say other than this is drinking beautifully right now (at least this bottle). Decanted for about 1 hour. Gorgeous aroma of cassis and blackcurrants, fine smoky oak and vanilla, chocolaty mint. Dense fruit and herbs. CG:Compact black cherry aromas seasoned with notes of root beer, orange rind and creme de cassis are aided further by rich oaky smells, and that oak is an enriching influence in the wine's fairly open, rounded flavors as well. A wine that asks but a few years of patience to be at its best, it will prove to be a fine partner to rich roasts of beef and lamb.

Extraordinarily rich and deep. With tons of dark, luscious chocolately flavors and intense aromas of black fruit supported by nearly perfect structure and balance, this 2001 Cabernet would certainly benefit from a few years in the cellar or at least an hour or so in a decanter.

89 points: After reading the 7/31/04 Wine Spectator review that gave this wine a 78-point rating, I wasn't expecting much from this. Molesworth must have had a bad bottle. This was a very pleasant wine. Dark red with just a hint of lightening at the edges. Medium bodied with berry, leather and garrigues balanced by adequate tannins and acidity. This should drink well for at least another three or four years. Seattle Winesquire: 89 points:

2003Henri Boillot Corton-Charlemagne Grand CruzzChardonnay Medical Metrics801  93-95ST
Shows an impressive depth of aromas on the nose - upfront vanilla, creamy butter, nougat, macadamia and toasted almonds are intertwined with opulent tropical fruits and spices. The palate is humble to begin with, but builds majesticaly into an orchestral array of flavours and textures with alluring hints of minerals among its peaches, apples and tropical fruits, nutty, fresh baked bread and buttery oak influenced structure. Balancing, rounded acidity draws out the finish into a persistant length that keeps coming back to haunt the palate. Great finesse and concentration make for an addictive combination.

The vineyards, which are situated on the finest hills of the Valpolicella Classico, are well cultivated, limited in production and high in quality. The land, rich in clay and sun, is a key element that encourages concentration of sugar and flavour.

2001Teatown Cellars Napa Valley MerlotMerlot house163  CG92
Very well-concentrated and somewhat complex aromas of black cherries, briar, hints of berries and creamy oak show the wine off nicely from first sniff, and the layered, rich and fairly succulent flavors that follow are classically Merlot in direction. Also very much on point in the mouth with its supple, fairly mouthfilling texture, this incredibly priceworthy wine delivers succulent flavors of ripe red cherries, creme brulee, caramel and cassis. Its light-medium tannins add a bit of toughness to the finish and call for bottle age of three to five years and service with steaks or chops. GOOD VALUE
1999Tenuta San Filippo FantiSangiovese House653  WS98
Now one of the greatest producers of Brunello thanks to the help of consulting enologist Stefano Chioccioli. Dark-colored, with incredible aromas of blackberry, treacle tart and smoke. Almost meaty. Full-bodied, with fantastically silky rich tannins. It goes on and on. This shows massive structure, yet Best after 2008."
2001Tezza AmaroneAmarone Winery35(6)
DiWine: This Amarone shows an intense ruby red color and nuances of garnet red, little transparency. The nose reveals intense, clean, pleasing, refined and elegant aromas that start with hints of blackberry, plum and black cherry followed by aromas of blueberry, dried violet, licorice, tobacco, vanilla, chocolate and hints of black pepper and enamel. In the mouth has good correspondence to the nose, a slightly tannic attack and pleasing roundness, however well balanced by alcohol, full body, intense flavors, good tannins. The finish is persistent with good flavors of blackberry, plum and black cherry. A well made wine. This Amarone ages for 2 years in barrique followed by one year of aging in bottle. Food Match: Braised and stewed meat, Roasted meat, Game, Hard cheese
Great in Italy

2004Two Hands Brave FacesShiraz/Grenache Costco201  92WA
A blend of 70% Shiraz and 30% Grenache, the 2004 Brave Faces is a fruit-forward, exuberant offering that Michael Twelftree describes as “one of the whores in my line-up.” A luscious red revealing abundant amounts of cherries, raspberries, and currants intermixed with notions of licorice and spice, it is about as seductive as a Syrah/Grenache blend can be. Since only 20% new oak was used, the fruit is its dominant characteristic. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.
2004Two Hands Lily's GardenShiraz  251  94WS
Lithe, almost elegant, with impressive depth of flavor and fine texture. The flavors center on blackberry, cherry, dried tomato, exotic spices and mineral notes as the finish sails on and on against refined tannins. Best from 2007 through 2016. 1,500 cases imported."

Dark berries, black olives and hints of rosemary with sophisticated appeal. The fresh red fruits and hints of spice on the nose do not disappoint on the palate.

2002Weingut Kurt Hain Piesporter GoldtropfchenRiesling Costco141  WS90
Ripe apricot, mango and citrus notes pick up a mineral accent in this rich, emphatic Mosel Riesling. It seems a bit obvious, but there's no denying its delicious flavors. Drink now through 2012

2001Zenato Valpolicella RipassoRed Wine valpolicella/amarone Monsterville231
This full-bodied red is made in the Ripasso style (the Valpolicella wine is run through the leftover pumice from making Amarone), making it stylistically between Valpolicella and an Amarone. It has intense notes of dark cherry and blackberry with notes of vanilla, spice, and subtle raisin. A soothing winter warmer in every sense. A great treat while sledding or with a spice rubbed pork roast.

Cellar contains 263 bottles, 120 wines, 160 entries
