1989Chateau Haut Brion Cru Classe de GravesBordeaux  1001  100
Blockbuster. This is incredibly impressive with aromas of plums, berry, tobacco and cedar. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Still closed, but so opulent and beautiful. Raspberry aftertaste. Lasts for minutes. I underrated this years ago. Clearly 100 points. '89/'90 Bordeaux non-blind horizontal. Best after 2008.
1985Chateau Haut Brion Premier Grand Cru ClasseBordeaux  1001  95
Back on form with the '85 after a slightly less-grand '83, this is a gorgeous, harmonious wine. Beautiful ripe fruit and tobacco aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and velvety with a fine rich finish. Try after 1998.
2001Chateau L'Eglise-ClinetBordeaux  12011  94
Wild and exotic on the nose, with blackberry, meat and spice. Medium- to full-bodied, with super well?integrated tannins and a lovely balance of fruit and spice on the finish. This is really a beauty?a seductive young wine. Just a few notches below the 2000. Best after 2008. 1,330 cases made.
1988Chateau Lafite RothschildBordeaux   1  94
Bright, crisp flavors of cranberry, raspberry and cherry are accented by stylish butter and nutmeg notes from aging in new oak barrels. A bit lean, but it's a classic claret in its balance.--Lafite Rothschild vertical. Best after 1997.

Big and chewy. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, long currant, berry and cherry character. Underrated. Still more to come in this wine.--Bordeaux retrospective. Drink now

Rich and ripe wine. Dark red color with an amber edge. Loads of meat, berry and tobacco character on the nose. Very rich. Full-bodied, with soft, velvety tannins and a long, ultraripe fruit finish. Still very fresh and young.--Latour vertical. Best from 2000 through 2015
1993Chateau Mouton RothschildBordeaux  721  90
Mouton comes through again. Impressive '93, deep in color and full-bodied, boasting plenty of currant, black cherry, mint and toast character. Well crafted, showing depth for this vintage. Give the tannins some time to mellow. Try in 2000.
1985Chateau-Lynch Bages Grand Cru ClasseBordeaux  801  95
Our wine of the year in 1988 and still well worth it. The first bottle was slightly cheesy but the second one was superb, showing outstanding ripe berry, cherry and currant flavors and layers of silky fine tannins. Sexy and exciting. Drink now or hold.
